Currently, there are 41 deacons divided among 5 geographical parishes.
Each deacon is responsible for 20-30 members of the congregation. We call them flocks, because shepherding is part of what deacons do. We meet monthly on the 4th Tuesday of the month, organize parish wide parties and flock get-togethers, and also plan the Great Gathering which is held before the annual meeting in October.
Services the deacons provide for the church are:
- Staff memorial service receptions
- Set up for communion services
- Take sanctuary flowers to shut ins
- Provide greeters for the services
On a personal level what does having a deacon mean to you?
- Your deacon prays for you.
- They will send you letters, cards, notes.
- They will call you, visit you and try to form a relationship with you.
- They may invite you to some social function to get to know you better and help you feel connected to the church.
- They can provide help and support if you are ill or disabled.
- They can provide limited financial aid to persons who find themselves temporarily in financial straits.
In the pews and in your monthly stewardship letter there is an envelope for the Deacon Fund. Your contributions each month make possible our generosity to members who have sudden expenses beyond their means and transients who come to the church looking for help.
