Music By The Sea * Sanctuary Choir
Adult Choirs Minimize

The Sanctuary Choir could be described as part relational group and part service organization. In addition to contributing their musical skills to worship, we support and pray for each other, and enjoy learning about worship and music together. We are family, and we invite you to join us.

Along with providing music for Sunday morning worship services, the Sanctuary Choir prepares major works with orchestra several times a year. These special occasions give us a chance to grow in our skills and also our awareness of music and the many different ways we can worship God.

Eleventh Hour Choir-Our newest vocal emsemble meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:45-8:00pm and helps lead the 11:00 worship service each week.  This group, smaller in size than the Sanctuary Choir, specializes in more contemporary anthems.  Some singers with excellent musical skills and conflicts on Wednesdays join in on Sunday mornings at 10:15 to learn the anthem of the day.  Call Lorie Boes, director, for more information.

You are welcome to join the Sanctuary Choir or Eleventh Hour Choir at any time. For more information, please call Dr. Jean Gothold, Minister of Music and Worship at (310) 377-6882, ext. 227 or e-mail, jean@spbts.org.

Sanctuary Choir

On Sunday afternoon, March 14 at 3:00 pm the Sanctuary Choir, Cantata Choir and orchestra will present Karl Jenkins' Stabat Mater.  The devotional poem that is the basis for this piece was developed in the 13th century.  To this text Mr. Jenkins has added several other texts-both modern and ancient.  The entire piece invites us to stand with Mary at the cross, and stirs us to resist complacency as we consider Jesus' sacrifice.

The music reflects both Mr. Jenkins' classical training and his jazz background.  The fabric created by the choir and strings has a rhythmic underpinning of percussion that gives it an ethnic flavor.  In addition, two alto soloists add their color, and the choir sings in Latin, Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.

A lecture on the texts and music of this Stabat Mater will be given by Dr. Jean Gothold on Sunday, March 7 at 12:15 pm.  A light lunch will be served, so please phone in reservations to the office (310) 377-6882.

Childcare is available for the concert and for the lecture.  There is no admission charge.  Join us!
